Introduction

The English Department consists of two major fields : Literature and Language. Students majoring in English study British and American language and culture and gain an expertise in the English language. The Literature field includes the four significant genres of literature: poetry, the novel, drama, and literary criticism. Through subject courses and research, students have an opportunity to study the h istory of British and American literature, and comparative British and American literary criticism. Students are exposed to literary works from Beowulf to Shakespearean drama to the novels of Dickens and to American imagist poetry. The Language subfield is composed of three sections: practical English, linguistics and TESOL. Through practical English courses, students are expected to enhance their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Linguistics helps students enhance their knowledge of English syntax, semantics, phonetics, and phonology. TESOL courses focus on how to teach, organize a curriculum, and develop materials.
